Paul Gonzenbach has released 20 albums over the course of the past 20 years. The first three of those albums were with his former band The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up. Most of his solo albums are firmly in the realm of his slowcore-by-way-of-post-punk sound; however, his latest album, called Holy Joy, wipes the slate clean and starts anew.
Made over the course of the past two years, Holy Joy was recorded in live takes with minimal overdubs. The instrumentation of the album is very spare, mostly consisting of guitar, keyboard, and drum machine kick with other musicians making appearances on drums (toms only), flute, and violin at various points. Not fitting neatly into any genre or category, Holy Joy reimagines Gonzenbach’s sound with a palette of guitar and keyboard loops, minimal textures, and understated percussion. Holy Joy is out now.
